A new chapter for food in Scotland
At the end of 2025, the Scottish Government published the first National Good Food Nation Plan. A major step towards creating a food system that is healthier, fairer and better for the planet.
Now the focus turns to local action. The Highland Council and NHS Highland must develop their own Local Good Food Nation Plan, setting out how they will support a better food system for people living and working in the Highlands.
Why this matters
Food connects many of the issues that matter most to our communities – health, the environment, farming and fishing, local businesses, culture, and access to good food. Taking a whole food system approach helps bring these together and look at the bigger picture.
What’s happening now
Work has already begun to strengthen collaboration between Highland Council, NHS Highland and Highland Good Food Partnership. Together we’re exploring where the biggest opportunities lie; from quick wins to longer-term projects that could make a real difference to the Highland food system. For our explanation of the National Plan, read our blog here.
One key question still to be answered is what funding will be available from the Scottish Government to support this work.
How to get involved
Highland Good Food Partnership will help bring together voices from across the food system, including communities, farmers, crofters, businesses and organisations. These will help shape the Highland plan. So make sure you are a free member, as we will be getting in touch to ask you to contribute towards a consultation in 2026.
